The story of this wine begins with a debate. The head winemaker was skeptical at first; today he counts it among the most successful wines.

The vines grow on the Purweg site, on limestone bedrock that gives the wine minerality and a firm backbone. The microclimate is fine tuned by the confluence of the Danube and Morava right below the vineyard. The vineyard is certified organic and has been farmed biodynamically since 2017, with our own preparations, compost, and the horses Uriáš and Barin.

From the cellar

The most opened red in the cellar. What matters is drinkability.

Merlot Cabernet was never supposed to exist. Today it is the wine the owner drinks most often, a red for everyday drinking.

How a Bordeaux is born in Devín

  1. Step 01

    Biodynamic vineyard

The vineyard on the Purweg site is certified organic and has been run biodynamically since 2017. The soil between the rows is trodden by the horses Uriáš and Barin, not tractors. The grapes are picked strictly by hand into small crates with rigorous selection.

  2. Step 02

    Spontaneous fermentation

Merlot and Cabernet ferment separately, spontaneously on native yeasts. Maceration takes about four weeks with regular punching down of the cap by hand (pigeage), so the tannins are drawn out slowly and round.

  3. Step 03

    Barrels and amphorae

The wine matures in Austrian Stockinger wooden barrels and terracotta amphorae. The two varieties are blended and mature together. It is neither filtered nor fined, and sulfur stays at a minimum, under 50 mg/l.

Dark, deep red with violet glints. Black currant, blackberry and sour cherry, with graphite, tobacco and spice behind them. Full bodied and juicy, with soft, polished tannin.

It suits a festive dinner as well as bolder dishes: roast beef, game, lamb chops, aged hard cheeses. Let it breathe in the glass for 5 to 10 minutes so its aromatic profile opens fully.
